Radiation shielding for medical treatment facilities is critical in attenuating radiation exposure for patients and healthcare workers. The high intensity X-Ray, Gamma, and radioactive isotope radiation produced at these facilities is best absorbed by dense materials, including heavyweight concrete. Concrete made with Reiss Viking’s heavy weight aggregate (HWA) iron ore and steel products can be used to create a density in excess of 300 lbs/ft3 which provides superior radiation absorption versus a comparable thickness using standard concrete at 140 lbs/ft3. Reiss Viking’s HWA fine and coarse materials have been successfully used in several new construction and shielding upgrade projects throughout the country.
